Kevin Lynch, Adobe’s senior vice president and general manager of the document services business, asks the million-dollar question. “Why is the way we deal with documents still so slow, fragmented and onerous? And it’s not just something we deal with in our personal lives. It’s also a real business problem.”
Kevin expands, “Let’s face it. The way we’ve been working with documents is broken. I can stream hours of ESPN on my phone or watch every episode of House of Cards on my tablet. Yet I still have to go 15 minutes early to a doctor’s office so I can fill in my address in triplicate. It’s a problem that is as pervasive as it is wasteful, afflicting organizations of all sizes in all industries around the world. Research shows that both people and businesses are stuck in document processes that are slow and fragmented.
‘The Document Disconnect’
According to a recent survey by IDC1, disconnected document processes are pervasive and negatively impact all areas of business. More than 80% of document work is still not digital, with documents often making one or more transitions into and out of paper, especially when signatures are involved. In addition, workers are spending more than one-third of their time on administrative tasks instead of core work. It’s a problem that businesses can no longer afford to ignore. ‘Paper Jam: Why Documents are Dragging Us Down’
In addition to IDC, a study by Adobe titled Paper Jam: Why Documents are Dragging Us Down, has exposed how antiquated business processes and outdated ways of working with documents are having a dramatic impact on productivity, efficiency and worker satisfaction. The findings show that 83% of workers feel their success and ability to be productive at work are slowed down by outdated ways of working with documents.
